«Addio – Willkommen – A revair. Migrationsgeschichten aus dem Grandhotel Alpen»

Migration and tourism have been closely intertwined for over 150 years. With early Alpine tourism, a new economic and living space is emerging between Graubünden, Vorarlberg and southern Tyrol. It is supported by people who leave their homes for a season or forever to open up new fields of work on construction sites, in hotels or in self-employed professions.
The exhibition focuses on their life stories. They have their say in six of their own houses: a construction worker from the Val di Non who founds a construction company in Vorarlberg; an assistant chef from Siena who works his way up to head chef through twenty hotels throughout Europe; a waitress from the canton of Zurich who records her experiences in a booklet; a Jewish photographer from Hungary who opens a studio in Merano; a young ski pioneer who leads the first ski course on the Arlberg; and a lifeguard couple from Merano, who are denied the summer season in the Engadine by the First World War. They tell of departure and arrival, of deprivation and opportunity between St. Moritz, Lech and Merano. Their lives show how cross-border mobility shaped the Alpine region, connected it and led it into the modern age.
