Musik aus Italien und der Schweiz

As in the 2nd and 3rd programmes, the dialogue between Swiss and Italian music is a central theme here. In addition to the Sequenza for soprano, the one for trombone solo by Berio can also be heard. Berio's 10 sequences are milestones of 20th-century solo literature. These have influenced entire generations of composers and are still considered masterpieces of solo literature.

A bridge to a completely different, equally high-quality contemporary music is formed by Berio's short works: Water Piano – Earth Piano – and Bin. Here Berio ventures into a very tonal and almost kitschy musical language, unthinkable for many composers in his time!

It is often overlooked that a large number of Berio's contemporaries composed almost exclusively tonal and highly sentimental music, namely the large squad of outstanding Italian film music composers. With Stelvio Cipriani, one of the great ones is represented in this program.
