Rheinschlucht (Ruinaulta)
«Switzerland's Grand Canyon» is an impressive natural setting that can be explored by train, on foot, by bicycle and mountain bike or on the Rhine.

Description

The Rhine Gorge lies just outside the gates of the Alpine City of Chur, easily accessible by public transport. What began as the Flims landslide has now become a unique natural backdrop: 10,000 years ago, 10 billion cubic metres of rock thundered into the valley. Since then, the Rhine has carved a path through the bedrock between Ilanz and Reichenau. The result is a ravine that is justly referred to as the Swiss Grand Canyon. The bizarre stone formations bordered by pine tree captivate train passengers, ramblers, mountain bikers and river rafters from around the world. Several panorama platforms along the gorge allow for breathtaking views over the Rhine Gorge, called «Ruinaulta» in Romansh.

Nature Monument
The value of this impressive landscape was recognised early on and in 1977 it was one of the first landscapes in Switzerland to be placed under national protection - even before the Rhine Falls and the Matterhorn. Not only are the impressive limestone walls and the vast floodplain forests fascinating, the Rhine Gorge is also home to a variety of rare plants (including various orchids) and rare animals (especially birds, butterflies and bats).

Experience the Rhine Gorge

  • The Rhaetian Railway runs right through the middle of the Rhine Gorge, opening up spectacular views - from the comfort of a railway carriage.
  • Numerous hiking trails, several viewing platforms and barbecue areas provide unique hiking experiences.
  • There are also several paths and trails for cyclists and mountain bikers to discover.
  • As part of the «Transruinaulta», the Rhine Gorge also offers trail runners a fascinating running experience.
  • Gliding through the Rhine Gorge on the waters of the Vorderrhein is a fascinating experience. The section between Ilanz and Versam to Reichenau is one of the most scenic stretches in Switzerland. Various providers offer tours with rafting boats, canoes, packrafts, funyaks and hydrospeeding is also possible.

Alpenbikepark Chur
The Alpenbikepark Chur with its five freeride trails is one of the best and most varied bike parks in Switzerland. The Chur cableways take mountain bikers directly from the city of Chur up 1,000 metres to the local mountain Brambrüesch - where the downhill & freeride action begins.

Description

Five varied trails in three levels of difficulty (blue / red / black) are available on Chur's local mountain. There is an altitude difference of 1,000 metres between the starting point at 1,595 metres and the valley station at 595 metres. The trails are peppered with numerous elements such as steep wall curves, jumps, northshores, drops, root and stone passages. The breathtaking view into the Rhine valley makes your pulse beat faster. The arrival at the finish in the Alpine City of Chur is unique: where else can you enjoy a coffee or a ice cream in the cosy ambience of a car-free old town before climbing back onto the cableways and looking forward to the next descent.

The bike trails, known since the MTB Swiss Championships 2009, have been steadily expanded since then. Many returning visitors describe the Alpenbikepark as one of the best bike parks in Switzerland due to its varied set-up and well-maintained tracks. The constant expansions over the years have made the park a real insider tip.

Due to the relatively low altitude of the bike park (lower distances: 1170 - 595 m, upper distances: 1595 - 1170 m) the Alpenbikepark is also an established attraction in the low season. The pre-season in spring starts unsually already in April and the autumn season often lasts well into the wintertime.

Track overview

The Brambi Flow is a flowtrail in the upper section of the Alpenbikepark Chur. The trail is designed that it can be operated even by beginners as a twisty singletrail. Many riparian curves provide a powerful flow and lots of fun, whether biking downhill or cross country.

The Alpenride is a trail in the upper section of the Alpenbikepark Chur. It is a freeride classic with several jumps, drops and a good mix between easier and more difficult sections.

The Rock'n'Roll is a trail in the upper section of the Alpenbikepark Chur. As the name implies: The thing rocks and rolls! Technically demanding and with many jumps advanced downhillers get their money's worth.

The Chur Flow is a trail in the lower section of the Alpenbikepark Chur. The route is moderately steep and very varied. The main line works well for beginners. But also freeride cracks appreciate the route thanks to some crunchy side lines with jumps, drops, step-up & step-down and more elements.

The Vertigo is a trail in the lower section of the Alpenbikepark Chur. With the steep S-curve at the beginning, a jump series in the upper part and a technically challenging trail in the lower part, advanced downhillers will have lots of fun on this track.

Haldenstein climbing garden

Klettergarten Haldenstein
The founding father of Graubünden's climbing gardens: Since the 1950 climbers have been flocking to the former stone quarry in Haldenstein.

Description

Haldenstein climbing garden is considered Switzerland's first of its kind. Already in the 1950s it was a popular "playground" for climbers in and around Chur. Thanks to a great restoration effort in 2012/2013, many of the routes have been improved, signed and made safer, and there is a new information board with an overview of all the routes.

The climbing garden along the Rhine is divided in 3 sectors: At the far right, beginner routes with degrees from 3 to 5 ( top rope can be set from above). In the middle section there are partially stripped down tours from 5th to 7th degree, up to 3 ropes lengths long. The longest and most rewarding climbs are at the left-hand side. The routes are well marked and secured. It's not advisable to climb in hot or windy weather, but on a sunny day it's possible to climb even in winter.

The network of routes can get a bit confusing, which requires precise study of the topographic layout and good instincts. The terrain is child-friendly and easily accessible within two minutes.

Topographic layout of Haldenstein climbing garden (pdf)

Route tip "Plattenwand"

Access approx. 20 meters left above the first sector, at the bolt and the conspicuous rock pedestal.

1. Sl 5 From bolt right into the dihedral and from the edge straight to first belaly (belays are one oversized bolt and at least one extra bolt).

2. Sl 6+ Move on upwards to the right along the ledges. A beautiful, stimulating climb. You can skip the next belay and go directly 10 meters to the right into the visible dihedral (don't follow the old bolts or those straight up, 7+!). Follow along up to the belay.

3. Sl 6+\\7- The first bolt is a bit too high to be easily reachable. You can overcame the slight overhang with some imaginative movement using the ledge on the top right. Move flat to belay.

4 Sl 5+ Slab climbing through the big slab. First horizontal to the left, then slightly upwards and before the belay through a flat Haldenstein dihedral.

5. Sl 7 Slighty slippery ledges left towards the overhang, the bold on top of the edge is the best handle. Free? As dessert a nice crack up to the belay on old quarry anchors.
