Architecture: Graubünden Museum of Art

Architektur: Bündner Kunstmuseum
The Bündner Kunstmuseum - a balancing act between tradition and modernity

Description

The Bündner Kunstmuseum (Graubünden Museum of Art) consists of two buildings - the neoclassical Villa Planta from 1875 and the extension by the architects Barozzi & Veiga from the 2016. The Villa Planta is one of the most important 19th-century buildings in Graubünden and one of the most magnificent works by the architect Johannes Ludwig. With its partially sumptuous decor, it stands in contrast to the striking yet simple new building. The Palladian style and the Orientalist building design that constitute the essential characteristic of the Villa Planta are taken up and given new architectural expression by the extension building.

Würth International AG

Würth International AG
Forum Würth with sculpture park

Description

Openness, brightness, transparency - these were factors that were set as criteria for the creation of the Würth company building. The Chur-based architectural firm commissioned with the building, Jüngling & Hagmann, has implemented these factors to perfection, creating an impressive building that creates a stir for miles around. The separate body of the new administrative Würth holding company building is a light, transparently decorated space connected to the extensive parkland and integrated into the open spaces of the natural environment as a free-standing building. The publicly accessible Würth Chur Forum is also housed in the building.

Unterer Spaniöl

Unterer Spaniöl
Unterer Spaniöl
Manor house Untere Spaniöl, in the picturesque Süsswinkelgasse

Description

This late Gothic building was constructed in the 15th century. Both the main steps and the entrance doors, with their decorative architrave, date back to this period. Some two centuries later, in 1654, the building was renovated and extended, employing the baroque stylistic devices of the day. The interior reveals magnificently furnished rooms. These include a spacious garden room, the “Sala terrena”, on the ground floor and, on the first floor, a room with a baroque stucco ceiling and, adjoining it, a late Gothic room with well-preserved wall panels from the late 15th century.

Graubünden Cantonal Bank

Postplatz
Headquarters Graubündner Kantonalbank in Chur

Description

The architecture of modern banks is usually clear-cut and cool, and thus often detached from its surroundings. However, this is certainly not the case with the head office of the Graubünden Cantonal Bank; erected between 1909 and 1911, the building by architects Otto Schäfer and Martin Risch is a veritable icon of the “Bündner Heimatstil” movement. Its close ties with Graubünden are in evidence right down to the smallest detail; wherever you look there are motifs from local folklore. In the main hall is a wall painting by the Chur artist, Christian Conradin, depicting Graubünden’s economy.
