This varied loop tour begins in the middle of the Graubünden capital. But the busy city life is soon left far behind, because the route takes you on a tranquil neighbourhood road into nature. You cross the Fürstenwald, a popular local recreation area with views of the city and the Calanda. The historic Trimmiser Mittelweg then takes you through open pastures to the village of Trimmis. The route follows the "Bündner Rheintal Wine Trail" on several sections. Accordingly, it provides an insight into the local winegrowing culture. This has a long tradition as first mentions go back to the year 765. The Graubünden Rhine valley winegrowing region stretches from Bonaduz to Fläsch and covers around 420 hectares. Thanks to the mild climate and the foehn, the grapes thrive magnificently in the calcareous soils - especially the typical Blauburgunder variety.

Past the imposing, former moated castle of Marschlins, the route follows the Landquart river to the village of the same name. The Landquart has its source above Klosters, flows through the Prättigau valley and finally into the Rhine at Landquart. Here you return on the popular cycling route no. 2, the Rhine route. From Zizers, the path repeatedly follows the young Alpine Rhine. This has its source at the Oberalp pass as the Vorderrhein and at Rheinwald as the Hinterrhein. At Reichenau-Tamins, the two main arms join to form the Rhine. Switzerland’s largest river flows for a total of 1230 kilometres via Lake Constance through Germany, on to Holland, and into the North Sea.

At Haldenstein, you cross to the other river bank. At the level of the town of Chur, the cycle path crosses the Rhine again on the Pardisla bridge which was built especially for cyclists and pedestrians. Shortly afterwards you reach another regional river: the Plessur has its source in the mountainous area between Arosa and Lenzerheide, flows past Arosa through the Schanfigg valley and into the Rhine at Chur. The route follows the river, and over the arched bicycle and pedestrian bridge, built in 2020, you finally dive right into the centre of Chur with its picturesque, car-free old town. Before returning to the station, you can stop at one of the numerous restaurants with sun terraces. The tour comes to a leisurely end in the unique ambience of Switzerland's oldest city.

The Bündner Herrschaft, Graubunden’s fertile garden and winery lies on a mound of slate detritus. Also the home of Heidi, Peter and Alpöhi (Heidi’s grandfather).

The episcopal city of Chur is considered the oldest city in Switzerland. Through the German-speaking Churwaldnertal runs the wild Rabiosa gorge with its Passugger mineral springs. The spa hotel still bears witness to the Passugger spa business from the interwar period. Cultural sights from medieval times are the castle ruins Strassberg Malix, the monastery church Churwalden and the reformed church Parpan with its free-standing church tower.

Graubünden’s 150 km route between Müstair and Mustér (Disentis) presents the stunning valley landscapes of the Münstertal and dreamy Susaunatal, deep Schanfigg and varied Cadi– together with the four challenging passes, Costainer, Scaletta, Strela and Chrüzlipass.

 Physical efforts are however rewarded by the sight of picturesque Graubünden villages nestled between beautiful valley landscapes. Each valley portrays an independent community concerning history, culture, religion and laws. In fact, Graubünden reflects a concentrated picture of European variety – where the Jakobsweg Graubünden leads from east to west through the impressive region.

 Müstair with signs of Middle Ages lifestyle – and preceding Chur, Switzerland’s oldest town, Tschiertschen’s cathedral (Jakobskirche), displaying a mural from the hand of the Waltensburg master. And before Disentis, numerous traces remind one of the ancient pilgrims’ paths. From Amsteg the way then leads through the Urnerland to the National Route 4 ViaJacobi.

The Surselva is more than a mere mountain valley. The Surselva - meaning «above the forest» – is a world apart, with its own language (Sursilvan), its own history shaped by the Disentis Monastery and the mountain passes, its own breed of men and a natural character shaped by one particular element, one which is continually gaining in value: water. It’s for a good reason that the official source of the Rhine rises at Tomasee near the Oberalppass. The water, collected in dozens of reservoirs is an energy provider. It has also eaten its way through the world’s largest mapped rockslide at Flims. It has created the imposing Ruinaulta Gorge, which can hardly be beaten for ruggedness – particularly when seen from the vantage platform at Conn.

The hike through the Surselva leads through an intact landscape but also arouses culturally historic curiosity, whether with the paintings in the Waltensburg Protestant Church or in the light of the mystifying menhir at Falera.The finale of four very varied hiking days is a tour around the old town quarter of Chur, Switzerland’s oldest town.

Surselva - «above the forest» - Graubunden’s largest Romansch-speaking region. The wild gorge of the Vorderrhein is awe-inspiring - Switzerland’s Grand Canyon. Chur, the oldest town north of the Alps boasts the highest density of restaurants.

The route runs along the main road for a while until the silence begins at Rabius. Sections of hiking trail alternate with forest and alpine roads. Above Trun, you come to the settlement of Caltgadira, where the well-known pilgrimage church of Maria Licht has been a beautiful baroque building since 1683.

Now it's time to gain altitude. Over long stretches on hiking trails, you finally reach the village of Schlans. A Grisons mountain village could hardly be more original. A short walk through the alleyways is definitely worthwhile. The hike to Dardin continues for three kilometers on a paved side road, allowing you to relax and enjoy the mountain scenery. The final ascent to Brigels, again on well-maintained hiking trails, completes the day's hiking.

The mountain village of Schlans on the steep sunny slope is worth a long break.

The family mountain village of Brigels is not only a good place to spend the night, but also well worth a tour of the village.

It is also possible to stay overnight at the start of the stage in Rabius.
