Burg Haldenstein
Haldenstein has probably the highest density of castles out of all municipalities in Graubünden. There are no fewer than three castles within its borders.

Description

Castle Lichtenstein, constructed in the 12th century on a ridge some distance north of the village, was inhabited until about 1400 and was probably abandoned during the 15th century. It was the seat of the Lords of Lichtenstein until the house went extinct in the late 13th century. In then came into possession of the Lords of Haldenstein.

Haldenstein castle lies on a rocky ridge just above the village of the same name. It was built at the beginning of the 12th century und was inhabited until 1695. It was partially destroyed by earthquakes in 1769 and 1787. Haldenstein was the seat of the House of Haldenstein and administrative centre of its dominion. There are records of a dispute between the diocese of Chur and baron Johann von Vaz due to unauthorised extension of the castle.

Grottenstein is a cave castle of indeterminate age, situated at the bottom of a rock wall on the foot of Calanda mountain.

Postplatz
The Postplatz is the interface between the busy Bahnhofstrasse and the old town. It invites you to stroll, marvel and enjoy.

Description

The Postplatz is a hub of everyday life in Chur, for two important transport axes cross here. With its large department stores, Bahnhofstrasse, which continues into the Old Town as Poststrasse, constitutes the busiest shopping promenade in Chur. Grabenstrasse, which today leads the traffic around the outskirts of the Old Town, is historically also a “strolling mile”. For Grabenstrasse was designed as a typical 19th century boulevard – wide and impressive. Today it also marks the site where the former city walls once stood.

Chur’s boulevard between the station and Poststrasse has been completed in 2018. Postplatz has thus become larger and more attractive, including the impressive sculpture "Orbiter" by Robert Indermaur. The Postplatz invites passers-by to stroll, admire and enjoy.

Park Chur

City park

Stadtgarten
The city garden has its origin in a cemetery.

Description

Around 1850, going for a leisurely stroll was fully in trend. In Chur things were no different, and the municipal park was the ideal place for it. The fact that the memorial slabs on the park walls rather point to last resting places than the spot for a daily stroll is no coincidence – from 1529, a cemetery was located here. The area was not transformed into the present-day park until between 1866 and 1868. Even today, an air of quiet and reverence is commanded by two historical monuments situated here; one is dedicated to the poet, Johann Gaudenz von Salis (1762–1834), the other commemorates those who gave their lives during the War.

The Schuhmacher guild house with its tower from 1510 and a late Gothic entrance door. The Square was originally named New Tower Square after it. The red house was purchased, refurbished and extended by an enclosed baroque garden by Commissari Rudolph von Salis in 1637. The "Haus zum Meerhafen" or "Sea Harbour House" with its box-shaped wooden structured dates from the time immediately after the fire of Chur in 1464. It's unclear how the house got its name.
