The Juchs Alp (1,378 m) is accessible via hiking trails from Chur and Brambrüesch. It is also a popular outing destination for mountain bikers. The Alp is a part of the Domat/Ems municipality and is only catered during the height of summer, when the cows are on the alp (June to September). It is a former Walser settlement. Historical Site Chur

Welschdörfli

Welschdörfli
The Welschdörfli is where Chur's nightlife takes place. In Roman times there was a settlement here with residential buildings, workshops and a thermal bath.

Description

A “pleasure mile” with a Roman past – that is the Welschdörfli. In Roman times, a settlement comprising living quarters, workshops and a thermal spring stood close to where bars now rub shoulders with cabarets. The area was actually inhabited much earlier; excavations on the Ackermann site have resulted in archaeological finds dating back to the Neolithic Age (5,000 –1,800 BC). Since 1986 the finds from Roman times have been protected by special buildings designed by Graubünden architect Peter Zumthor and are accessible by the general public.

In the middle of the picturesque Old Town of Chur, the Rhaetian Museum presents Bündner history and stories from its beginnings to the present day. A permanent exhibition on four floors and changing special exhibitions invite visitors to take a journey through the centuries.

Description

The Raetian Museum is housed in a baroque patrician house built in 1675 and illustrates and imparts the history of Graubünden. In addition to the permanent exhibition, which includes archaeological, historico-cultural, and ethnographic objects from all over Graubünden Canton from pre- and early history to the present, a diverse programme of exhibitions deals with contemporary Grison culture and history. The public can explore these topics at a wide range of events.

A visit is worthwile also for young guests: Children can get a big key from the ticket desk which opens a box in every room. Inside the box is child-friendly information about the theme of the room to complement the guides which are geared toward adults.

Mühleturm mit dem grössten Wandgemälde der Schweiz
Rhine mill and duck pond at Untertorer Mühlbach

Description

The pond was created in the middle of the 20th century by the damming of the Untertorer Mühlbach, so that today a turbine plant of 40 kWh can be driven. At the end of the 1820s, the town of Chur built a sawmill here. A mill was built on the site in 1871. While in 1899 two water wheels used the natural gradient of the Mühlbach, in 1959 two Francis turbines with an output of 35 and 65 HP respectively powered the mill. Grüninger Mühlen AG bought the Rheinmühle, including the pond, water channel and turbine, in 1986. In 2018, the Chur artist Fabian "Bane" Florin and his team created the largest mural painting in Switzerland at the Mühleturm.

A hiking trail leads past the pond and along the Mühlebach stream, connecting the town with the Untere Au and the Rhine river.

A breathtaking view from the top over the city of Chur and the surrounding Rhine Valley.

Description

The Fürhörnli juts on 1'888 m like a balcony out into the abyss and offers a splendid panorama view on the Alpine City of Chur and the surrounding Rhine valley. The branch-off to the Fürhörnli peak is not marked, but the tracks left from the hiking route are well recognizable. Along the tree-covered ridge you reach the Fürhörnli in a few steps. Be careful on the small and exposed peak-balcony (accession only recommended for people free from giddiness).
