Description

This stage takes us from Tschiertschen on the left bank of the Plessur via Praden and Passugg to Martinsplatz in Chur's old town. The Cathedral of Santa Maria in Chur is part of the bishopric there. Built on the foundations of a Roman fort, this is the oldest bishop's seat north of the Alps.
Our way leads us past Passugg with the former  Kurhaus there. The 5 healing springs bubbling up here with different chemical compositions were first mentioned in 1562. The spa was closed in 1979. Today, the building is used by the Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality, the international Graubünden hotel management and tourism school, but also for local school operations.
Chur is the seat of the diocese of the same name and probably dates back to the 4th century, a bishop of the Diocese of Chur was first mentioned in a document in 451.

Geheimtipp

Chur is the capital of the canton of Graubünden and is a lively city for young and old.

Sicherheitshinweis

Detour Felsberg: The route will be diverted until further notice due to landslide. Redirection takes you 30 minutes more.

Directions

Be careful when crossing the Steinbachtobel: if the trail is poorly visible when crossing the (sometimes dry) stream bed, do NOT follow the stream bed in the fall line, but immediately look for the continuation of the trail on the other side ABOVE the stream bed. where the trail then initially follows the Steinbach parallel.

Description

Anyone walking through Chur often hears the water gurgling beneath them or sees small streams rushing past. No, it is not a sewer, it is the Chur mill streams. Since Chur itself has no water of its own and still obtains its drinking water from sources of value, the mill streams were the lifelines of the city for centuries. The Plessur as the dominant river in the landscape flows through Chur, but it has much of a wild mountain stream on which neither goods could be transported nor mills could be driven. Therefore, the construction of the mill streams was the prerequisite for a regulated water supply of Chur. They provided the city with service water and hydroelectric power and enabled industry and the population to survive in Chur. Did you know, for example, that the Chur Quadereis was produced annually with the water of the Mühlbach or that the repair workshop of the SBB was powered by the same water?

At the end of the Pulvermühle, directly at the roundabout, turn right and after a few meters you will see the mill streams again. Cross the road at the signalized crossing and follow Küblereiweg and later Vogelsangweg onto Sägenstrasse; turn right at the road junction near the climbing center. Follow Sägenstrasse until you have passed Merkle Metallbau and are in front of the CADA small power station. Continue along Sägenstrasse until you reach the roundabout, turn right there and continue to the end of the road. Turn left at the next roundabout and follow Kasernenstrasse to the entrance "Welschdörfli". Diagonally opposite the hotel Schweizerhaus, turn right into Seilerbahnweg and then directly left into St. Margrethenstrasse. Follow this street, cross Malixerstrasse and turn into Höhenbühlweg. Follow the mill streams until you reach the "Ententeich" near Mehli Landmaschinen. From here on you can no longer walk along the mill streams, but follow the Rheinmühleweg until you reach the field path. Turn right there and follow the path for a few meters until just before the allotment gardens. Turn left there and follow the path to the banks of the Rhine and the Rhine promenade. At the Rhine turn left and follow the shore to Camp Au; during this walk you will see the mouth of the mill streams on the Rhine. Description

The Schanfigg village trail now connects the villages of Schanfigg from Chur to Arosa on both sides of the valley for hikers. Traditional and authentic village culture can be experienced on the 52 km long (mountain) hiking trail.

The Dörferweg leads through intact and varied landscapes with magnificent views, through meadows and forests, across Töbel and past Maiensässen and, last but not least, through the villages with their characteristic wooden knitted buildings, farm and village shops, restaurants and Besenbeizen. The alternation of natural and cultural landscapes can be experienced at every turn, as can be seen, for example, in the scenically magnificent sections at Gründji & Frauentobel.

The village trail enriches the range of hiking opportunities in Schanfigg. Thanks to the good public transport connections between the villages, a variety of circular hikes can be planned, e.g. in connection with the Schanfigger Höhenweg.

Description

This section is the "wildest" of the long-distance hike. Although with Lafet and Balnettis you pass beautiful, traditional alpine pastures and mountain meadows, you often find yourself in wild gorges. The path here is little used and is not part of alpine access roads as on other parts of the route. It is all the more astonishing when you suddenly come across farmers making hay again. The meadows are very high and steep, and the access from the valley also leads over extremely steep roads, which are now being replaced by the - naturally sensible - melioration roads.

Geheimtipp

Very motivated and sporty hikers take the diversions over the Montalin (Chur's local mountain).

Sicherheitshinweis

In case of rain and especially thunderstorms, the ravines must be passed with increased caution.

Basically, in bad weather you should think twice about walking the trail, as it is not without danger.

Bündner Kunstmuseum, Ausstellung Erweiterungsbau
With the expansion (2014-2016), the Graubünden Art Museum has become one of the most attractive museums in Switzerland for the public. It sees itself as a centre for art in and from Graubünden with international appeal.

Description

The extension of 2014-2016 has made the Art Museum Graubünden one of Switzerland's most attractive museums. It is a centre for art in and from Graubünden with international renown. The magnificent historical Villa Planta and the modern extension by Barozzi Veiga come together as a unique architectural unit which by itself is worth a visit.

A home for art in Graubünden

The unique collection comprises some 8,000 works from all strands of art ranging from the 18th century to the present and is exhibited on an area of 1,200 square metres. Among the highlights are works by Chur-born Angelika Kauffmann (1741 - 1807), one of the first female artists to win recognition by the Royal Academy in London. The heart of the collection is the artist family Giacometti, with pieces by the world-famous sculptor Alberto and the two accomplished Swiss painters Giovanni and Augusto. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1180 - 1938) and Swiss Expressionism are represented in the collection with some striking works. More recent and contemporary streams are represented by Matias Spescha (1925 - 2008), Not Vital (*1948) or Hans Danuser (*1953), to give an example.

Special exhibitions

In addition to the permanent exhibition, five to six exhibitions of historical and contemporary art, thematic or monographic in nature, are shown throughout the year. Information on current and future exhibitions can be found at www.buendner-kunstmuseum.ch

A public space where art comes alive

The museum is a space of encounter, where art becomes tangible for everyone thanks to a diverse and varied programme of tours, talks and other events. It is a house with open doors where everyone can feel at home and spend an enjoyable few hours. The art museum Graubünden offers a wide range of art mediation events and services complemented its exhibitions. Public tours, family and kids' events, art mediation for schools and adolescents, exhibition guides, academic publications, catalogues, symposia, artist talks and performances make for an interesting programme. The museum staff engages personally with its visitors to give them the best possible access to art in all its facets.

Museum cafe and bookshop

There is a stylish cafe in the museum, located in the stately conservatory of Villa Planta. During summer, visitors sit outside under a group of old, shady sequoias just off the pedestrian area. The cafe offers fresh, regional cuisine. In the Foyer you will find a well-stocked art book store with a wide selection of exhibition catalogues and art postcards depicting the most famous works from the museum's collection.
