Reichenau - confluence of the Rhine rivers

Reichenau - Zusammenfluss von Vorderrhein und Hinterrhein
The hamlet dominated by Reichenau Castle lies at the confluence of the Vorderrhein and Hinterrhein rivers and is thus virtually the birthplace of the Rhine.

Description

At the confluence of the Hinterrhein and the Vorderrhein, at the birthplace of the Alpine Rhine, is Reichenau. The place was already of great importance in the 14th century, when long-distance traffic over the Graubünden Alpine passes increased and two bridges and a customs house were built. Reichenau is a transport hub, where the routes of the north-south axis separate. Reichenau Castle stands in a spectacular location. Built in the 17th century by the Schauenstein episcopal minister family, it has a long history. The last king of France even lived here once. Today, the historical building belonging to the von Tscharner family is used as a winery.

Kunkelspass
Kunkels Pass connects the village of Vättis in the canton of St. Gallen with Tamins in Graubünden. The historical pass route is now a popular destination for hikers and cyclists.

Description

Finds suggest that the Saum route via Kunkels Pass was already crossed during Roman times. The route later took on great importance for the monastery of Pfäfers which owned a lot of land in Graubünden. Kunkels Pass was an alternative route for times when the Rhine valley was inaccessible due to flooding, or to bypass the tolling stations located in the valley. The Saum route also connected the alpine pastures of Tamins to the markets in the south. The current narrow road with its panoramic tunnel (width 2.3m) towards Tamins was constructed during the First World War. Kunkels Pass connects Vättis in the canton of St. Gallen to Tamins in Graubünden. On the Kunkels Pass there are the Tamins pasture alp Überuf and the mountain restaurant Überuf. The plateau is surrounded by impressive mountain formations such as the Calanda, the Crap Mats or the Ringelspitz.  The impressive mountain landscape is part of the UNESCO World Heritage tectonic arena Sardona. The municipality of Tamins has set up an interesting showroom on the Kunkels Pass.
