Rhaetian Railway (RhB) Administration Building

Verwaltungsgebäude Rhätische Bahn
Administration building of the Rhaetian Railway, the "little red one" with UNESCO award

Description

Large and grey, yet friendly - that sums up the building constructed by St. Moritz architect Nicolaus Hartmann between 1907 und 1910. While its grey, starkly structured façades give the building a majestic appearance, thanks to its large forecourt it is not overpowering. The architecture is an expression of the so-called "Bündner Heimatstil", a movement that took up and developed the traditional style of building of the region. The prestigious yet agreeable administration building is regarded as one of the movement's most significant works.

Postal bus station

Postautostation
The postal bus station of Chur is both a central starting point and an impressive architectural structure.

Description

The postal bus station at Chur train station is one of the city's most striking buildings. The imposing glass dome has been built in 1993 by architects Richard Brosi and Robert Obrist, provides shelter for passengers and buses in all weathers and serves as a starting point for many interesting rides aboard the yellow buses. At night, the structure is illuminated by spotlights, lighting up the centre of Chur. There is also a gently domed glass and steel structure over the platforms of Chur station. In its appearance, the 300 m long span of the unsupported glass roof is reminiscent of railway halls from the 19th century.

Heiligkreuz Church

Heiligkreuzkirche
Catholic Church of the Holy Cross, Masanserstrasse Chur

Description

The complex of the Catholic Heiligkreuzkirche (Church of the Holy Cross) and the adjoining parish centre occupies a prominent position at the Masanserstrasse/Giacomettistrasse road axis in the Masans district of Chur. It was built in 1966-69 by Walter M. Förderer and is one of the most important exposed concrete religious buildings in Switzerland. Both the nave and the massive tower have a clear, tiered structure that make the building look like a large expressive sculpture. The column-free, gradually opening semi-circular main room is mostly indirectly lit, which makes it seem like a rock cave.

Bündner Kunstmuseum, Ausstellung Erweiterungsbau
With the expansion (2014-2016), the Graubünden Art Museum has become one of the most attractive museums in Switzerland for the public. It sees itself as a centre for art in and from Graubünden with international appeal.

Description

The extension of 2014-2016 has made the Art Museum Graubünden one of Switzerland's most attractive museums. It is a centre for art in and from Graubünden with international renown. The magnificent historical Villa Planta and the modern extension by Barozzi Veiga come together as a unique architectural unit which by itself is worth a visit.

A home for art in Graubünden

The unique collection comprises some 8,000 works from all strands of art ranging from the 18th century to the present and is exhibited on an area of 1,200 square metres. Among the highlights are works by Chur-born Angelika Kauffmann (1741 - 1807), one of the first female artists to win recognition by the Royal Academy in London. The heart of the collection is the artist family Giacometti, with pieces by the world-famous sculptor Alberto and the two accomplished Swiss painters Giovanni and Augusto. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1180 - 1938) and Swiss Expressionism are represented in the collection with some striking works. More recent and contemporary streams are represented by Matias Spescha (1925 - 2008), Not Vital (*1948) or Hans Danuser (*1953), to give an example.

Special exhibitions

In addition to the permanent exhibition, five to six exhibitions of historical and contemporary art, thematic or monographic in nature, are shown throughout the year. Information on current and future exhibitions can be found at www.buendner-kunstmuseum.ch

A public space where art comes alive

The museum is a space of encounter, where art becomes tangible for everyone thanks to a diverse and varied programme of tours, talks and other events. It is a house with open doors where everyone can feel at home and spend an enjoyable few hours. The art museum Graubünden offers a wide range of art mediation events and services complemented its exhibitions. Public tours, family and kids' events, art mediation for schools and adolescents, exhibition guides, academic publications, catalogues, symposia, artist talks and performances make for an interesting programme. The museum staff engages personally with its visitors to give them the best possible access to art in all its facets.

Museum cafe and bookshop

There is a stylish cafe in the museum, located in the stately conservatory of Villa Planta. During summer, visitors sit outside under a group of old, shady sequoias just off the pedestrian area. The cafe offers fresh, regional cuisine. In the Foyer you will find a well-stocked art book store with a wide selection of exhibition catalogues and art postcards depicting the most famous works from the museum's collection.

Home Ground «Polar Bear» Graffiti

Home Ground «Eisbär» Graffiti
This graffiti artwork was created at the 1st StreetArtFestival.ch in Chur and is entitled «Home Ground».

Description

The Swiss NEVERCREW continues their tradition of painting meaningful murals that go beyond just being aesthetic. At the first StreetArtFestival.ch in Chur, the duo created their mural «Home Ground». With the local traditions and events playing a fundamental role in their concept, their common bear motif returned in a red and blue base of color. Their use of the symbolic target, again drew a crowd of wonderers and thought provokers. It is therefore about the sharing of natural resources and land between humankind and the other natural beings, about the balance in this cohabitation and about the meaning of borders and ownership if seen from a natural point of view and not perceived only from the human perspective. With their confidence in large spaces, the Montana GOLD and emulsion paint, blended together for a seamless finish.

With the StreetArtFestival Chur project, the Association for Urban Culture in Graubünden wants to make a new contemporary art form accessible to the public. At the first event in 2018, the mural "Home Ground", a large-scale work of art, was already realised. Further events are in the planning stage.

In the middle of the picturesque Old Town of Chur, the Rhaetian Museum presents Bündner history and stories from its beginnings to the present day. A permanent exhibition on four floors and changing special exhibitions invite visitors to take a journey through the centuries.

Description

The Raetian Museum is housed in a baroque patrician house built in 1675 and illustrates and imparts the history of Graubünden. In addition to the permanent exhibition, which includes archaeological, historico-cultural, and ethnographic objects from all over Graubünden Canton from pre- and early history to the present, a diverse programme of exhibitions deals with contemporary Grison culture and history. The public can explore these topics at a wide range of events.

Bei der Arbeit am Mühleturm
The Mühleturm is the "creative landmark" of the city of Chur and the largest mural painting in Switzerland.

Description

For more than two months, the Chur artist Fabian "Bane" Florin and his team created the largest mural painting in Switzerland at the Mühleturm in Chur. The work of art was unveiled at the beginning of November 2018 and shows two hands revealing a Grisons rock crystal at a height of almost 40 metres.

With this creative landmark, Fabian Florin has created a composition in his hometown in which the crystal is symbolic of the energy slumbering in all of us. On the other hand, Florin has built a lighthouse to show travellers the way and provide safety for those returning home.

Fabian Florin came up with the idea for the subject not on a drawing board in a studio in Chur, but in Iceland, 2500 kilometers away. „During a trip through Iceland, I was fascinated by the raw, archaic nature. The more I got to grips with the environment, the earth, the stones in Iceland, the more I realized what an incredible nature we were given in Graubünden,“ says Bane. The respect for time grew as a result of the intensive interactionwith the rock. Time, which is able to extract treasures from the Grison nature. Treasures such as the oldest local gemstone: Grison Cristal. „The oldest city in Switzerland, represented by the oldest Grison gemstone - the picture in my mind‘s eye fitted perfectly,“ Florin continued.
