Arcas Platz in der Churer Altstadt
Chur is Switzerland's oldest city, with more than a 5,000-year-long history of settlement. The historic centre is incredibly beautiful and completely free from traffic. You will find a wide range of cultural offers, shopping, cafes, restaurants and bars here.

Description

With a settlement history of over 5000 years, Chur is the oldest city in Switzerland and the picturesque old town is considered one of the most fully preserved in the country. Visitors from all over the world discover its sights during a leisurely stroll or on a guided city tour through the winding alleyways. Especially worth seeing are the episcopal palace, the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, and the superbly preserved buildings in the old town. Numerous boutiques, restaurants, bars, museums, and galleries, as well as regular markets and events, ensure the traffic-free old town has an almost Mediterranean charm.

Attractive, traffic-free, lively

Chur has one of the best preserved old towns in Switzerland. In recent decades it has been continuously restored, and today it is almost entirely free of traffic. Red signs lead you through the city and to the most beautiful sights, squares and alleyways. The old town also provides a backdrop for many colourful markets like the farmer's market every Saturday morning between May and October, the monthly flea market on Arcas square and the traditional Christmas market at the end of the year. The many boutiques, restaurants, cafes, bars, museums and galleries create an almost Mediterranean flair in the traffic-free old town.

Cathedral and Episcopal Court

Above the old town lies the episcopal court and the 800-year-old cathedral with its magnificent golden high altar from the late Gothic period. The cathedral is dedicated to the assumption of the Virgin Mary and is one of the most important cultural monuments in Switzerland. The court area was settled already during Roman times, when it served as a barracks. 451 Episcopal seat with simple basilica. The second cathedral in this place was built in the 8th century. Marble sculptures from that building are now standing in the newer cathedral (ornaments on the St. Lawrence altar and overlay on the St. Fidelis altar).  The current cathedral was built between 1150 and 1272 and, due to the position of our city along pass roads, it shows influences from all major Occidental cultures. Romanesque stone carvings on the capitals and the apostles' pillars. A Gothic sacrament house (1484) and a high altar by Jacob Russ (1486 -1492).

St.Martin's Church

The church that dominates the face of Chur was built after a fire in the city of the remains of a Carolingian church with three apses. It was completed in 1492 and has served as reformed town church since 1526. The south wall is adorned by three impressive stained-glass windows by Augusto Giacometti from the year 1919. The bell tower was constructed in 1509 and got its pointed tip after a series of modifications in 1917 and 1918. The St.Martin's fountain in front of the church was built in 1716, the column and the sculptures were made in 1910 after originals from 1716. A complete restoration was performed in 1990.

St.Lucius' Church

Of the Carolingian church with three apses from the first half of the 8th century, only the ring crypt with its confession remain today. 1140 Foundation of the Premonstratensian monastery, Romanesque Expansion (choir and crypt). After 1500 several fires, 1807 foundation of the priest seminary and elevation. 1951/52 restoration in the original style. Late Gothic carved altar (around 1520). Mosaic pictures by Hans Baumhauser(1952).

Description

The high plateau Brambrüesch can be reached comfortably with the cableways from the city of Chur. The hike first leads straight on to the mountain restaurant and then up to the Malixeralp on the right side of the ski lift and on to Spundis, where a fantastic panorama opens up towards the region of the Surselva. Via Hühnerköpfe (top station ski lift) the trail continues upwards through a varied and beautiful alpine flora. At Furggabüel you finally reach the highest point and are rewarded with an impressive all-round panorama. At this point, a two-part panorama board provides information about the surrounding mountain world and also the clearly visible mountain ranges of the Tectonic Arena Sardona (UNESCO World Heritage). Just a short walk and you reach the Dreibündenstein, marked by a clearly visible boundary stone, where you can also sign the summit book. With a magnificent view you continue your hike towards Pradaschier. After a relatively steep descent, turn right. Now it goes more gently downhill to Galtialp and one crosses on a beautiful hiking trail over Trittwald back towards Brambrüesch. On the way, a detour to the idyllic Edelweisshütte, where you can eat. Back in Brambrüesch, there are finally three mountain restaurants with sun terraces available, so that you can finish this wonderful circular hike with pleasure before taking the cableways back to Chur.

Alpenbikepark Chur
The Alpenbikepark Chur with its five freeride trails is one of the best and most varied bike parks in Switzerland. The Chur cableways take mountain bikers directly from the city of Chur up 1,000 metres to the local mountain Brambrüesch - where the downhill & freeride action begins.

Description

Five varied trails in three levels of difficulty (blue / red / black) are available on Chur's local mountain. There is an altitude difference of 1,000 metres between the starting point at 1,595 metres and the valley station at 595 metres. The trails are peppered with numerous elements such as steep wall curves, jumps, northshores, drops, root and stone passages. The breathtaking view into the Rhine valley makes your pulse beat faster. The arrival at the finish in the Alpine City of Chur is unique: where else can you enjoy a coffee or a ice cream in the cosy ambience of a car-free old town before climbing back onto the cableways and looking forward to the next descent.

The bike trails, known since the MTB Swiss Championships 2009, have been steadily expanded since then. Many returning visitors describe the Alpenbikepark as one of the best bike parks in Switzerland due to its varied set-up and well-maintained tracks. The constant expansions over the years have made the park a real insider tip.

Due to the relatively low altitude of the bike park (lower distances: 1170 - 595 m, upper distances: 1595 - 1170 m) the Alpenbikepark is also an established attraction in the low season. The pre-season in spring starts unsually already in April and the autumn season often lasts well into the wintertime.

Track overview

The Brambi Flow is a flowtrail in the upper section of the Alpenbikepark Chur. The trail is designed that it can be operated even by beginners as a twisty singletrail. Many riparian curves provide a powerful flow and lots of fun, whether biking downhill or cross country.

The Alpenride is a trail in the upper section of the Alpenbikepark Chur. It is a freeride classic with several jumps, drops and a good mix between easier and more difficult sections.

The Rock'n'Roll is a trail in the upper section of the Alpenbikepark Chur. As the name implies: The thing rocks and rolls! Technically demanding and with many jumps advanced downhillers get their money's worth.

The Chur Flow is a trail in the lower section of the Alpenbikepark Chur. The route is moderately steep and very varied. The main line works well for beginners. But also freeride cracks appreciate the route thanks to some crunchy side lines with jumps, drops, step-up & step-down and more elements.

The Vertigo is a trail in the lower section of the Alpenbikepark Chur. With the steep S-curve at the beginning, a jump series in the upper part and a technically challenging trail in the lower part, advanced downhillers will have lots of fun on this track.
